The Ancient City of Pinara

Perhaps one of the least known points of the Fethiye region, which has hosted countless civilizations throughout its rich history of thousands of years, is the ancient city of Pinara. The name of the city comes from the word “Pinale” because the region where it was founded consists of a round area. Although the foundation of the city is known to date back to 330-334 BC, what makes this region mystical is what the rock carvings were used for. It is not known whether the regular rectangular prism-shaped structures carved into the rocks were used as tombs or for settlement purposes. Although a large part of the city was destroyed by earthquakes in the 8th century, we understand that life continued as a Roman settlement after it was captured by Alexander the Great and the Pergamon Kingdoms.

Although it is a bit difficult to reach this area built on steep cliffs, the fascinating ambiance of this ancient city, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, will fascinate you.
