History of Afkule Monastery

Afkule Monastery is located in the south of Fethiye, very close to Kayaköy. This Byzantine monastery is thought to have been built by St. Eleftherios in the 5th century. The monastery is built on steep cliffs about 400 meters above the sea and offers a magnificent view of the Mediterranean Sea from here.

Legend of the Monastery

There are many legends about the monastery. One of them is that St. Eleftherios was a hermit here and built this monastery to be closer to God. According to the legend, St. Eleftherios devoted himself to worship and meditation here, hence the monastery’s name “Afkule”, which means “Fortress of Freedom”.

To reach Afkule Monastery, you need to follow a hiking trail starting from Kayaköy. This trail offers a pleasant walk accompanied by both historical ruins and magnificent nature views. During this walk, which takes about 1.5 hours, you can encounter the vegetation and various natural beauties of the region.
